A research study led by researcher E. Glenn Schellenberg, PhD and published by Journal of Educational Psychology (Vol. 98, No. 2) found that 6-year-olds given a year of voice or piano lessons saw a significantly larger increase in IQ than a control group that waited a year for musical instruction. Dr. Schellenberg (a psychology professor at the University of Toronto at Mississauga) found that IQ's continued to increase the longer children took the lessons.
The study focused on two groups: children 6 to 11 years old and college freshmen. The study involving the younger children found an increase in IQ of one-sixth of a point each month lessons continued. Six years of lessons was associated with an increase in IQ of 7.5 points, compared with children who did not have the same amount of musical instruction. The study showed the college students IQ's to increase two points over six years of playing music regularly.
Another study titled, "The Champions Of Change: The Impact of Arts On Learning" was a study funded by the President's Committee on The Arts and Humanities and The Arts Education Partnership (http://www.artsedge.kennedy-center.org/) found that "students with high levels of arts participation outperform arts-poor students by virtually every measure." Below is a table copied from this study that clearly illustrates this disparity.
Table: Grade Comparisons of High Arts vs. Low Arts Students in Grades 8 and 10| Grade 8 Academic Performance | Children Active in Music/Arts | Children Not Active in Music/Arts |
